The custom of making a distinctive mark on the body, such as an image or a piercing, is an ancient custom whose origins are lost in prehistory. Ethnographic studies have shown that these practices go beyond mere aesthetic decoration. In tribal contexts, they have ritual significance linked to the rites of passage throughout a persons life. They also have a symbolic role of integrating the individual into their particular tribal social fabric. In modern culture, although, these issues have not entirely disappeared, they are more subtle and complex enriched by a more diverse range of values. People choose to tattoo or pierce their skin for different reasons: to communicate an inner personality, to mark an important moment of their life and exorcise fear, to contest a rule. However, the choice to tattoo or pierce always has a deep meaning.
There are no special contraindications to having a piercing or a tattoo:the most important factor to be considered is to employ the skills of a trained experienced operator who works within rigorous hygiene and safety standards.
